Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers, a popular choice among cosmetic facial treatments, are trusted by over 3 million Americans every year. When injected, these fillers immediately smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, providing results that last for months or years. They work by plumping up areas in and around the eyes, nose, and mouth, restoring a youthful appearance without the need for surgery.

Dermal fillers are available under a variety of brand names, including:

  • Juvederm
  • Radiesse
  • Restylane
  • Dysport
  • Bellafill

Dermal filler injections are a nonsurgical cosmetic treatment that can make you look years younger without cosmetic surgery. When injected just under the skin, the fillers restore facial volume, plump fine lines, and smooth away wrinkles.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

As we age, our bodies begin to lose collagen, a naturally occurring substance crucial in maintaining connectivity and elasticity in our skin, muscles, and connective tissues. With less collagen, our skin loses volume and elasticity, becoming thinner and sagging.

Dermal fillers can improve facial appearance in several ways, including:

  • Smoothing away wrinkles
  • Adding volume to sagging skin
  • Improving facial symmetry
  • Plumping up the cheeks or lips
  • Reducing the creases running from either side of the nose to the outside of the lips

Types of Dermal Fillers

There are numerous dermal fillers available, falling into four categories:

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid (HA) occurs naturally in the skin to maintain volume and hydration. As you age, your body stops producing HA. Hyaluronic acid injections typically last six months to a year.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

This filler is a substance found in your bones. When injected into the skin, the effects of CaHA can last up to a year. Calcium Hydroxylapatite is usually used to fill deeper wrinkles.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)

This dermal filler helps produce new collagen and smooth away deep wrinkles. The smoothing action combined with renewed collagen production means this filler can last for two years or more.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

This innovative filler combines collagen and tiny beads, which are injected under the skin to give the skin volume and maintain firmness for a more youthful feel and appearance.

Dermal Filler Side Effects

Side effects to dermal fillers are rare and usually mild, resolving on their own in 7-14 days. These may include redness, swelling, pain, bruising, itching, or rash. More severe side effects may include infection or migration of the filler and are extremely rare. All side effects are reviewed with you in detail at your appointment.
